Polymer Banknote
The Polymer Bank Note Is Almost Impossible To Counterfeit

In 1967, the CSIRO began to experiment with new materials for printing bank notes (paper money). In 1988, the worlds first polymer (plastic) bank notes were printed and issued in Australia. These $10 notes were tough, stayed clean longer and worked well inside auto-teller machines. By 1996, all Australian bank notes were made of polymer. The notes have a clear window containing a secret image, and are almost impossible to fake. By 1997, Australia was also printing polymer bank notes for other nations.
