Until the 1850s people had to pay for postage when they received letters and parcels. In 1838, post offices in Sydney began selling a paper cover stamped and ready to be addressed to wrap letters and parcels in. This was the first time in the world that the idea of prepaid postage was tried. After the 1850’s postage stamps were used and were more successful.
