During the 1930s Melbourne engineer George Shepherd wanted a better wheel or caster for moving furniture like office chairs hospital beds or pianos. By 1948 he had invented a smooth running, steerable castor, made from a ball instead of a disc. Today Shepherd castors are used throughout the world
